The economic calendar will be active today, covering retail sales, deficit totals, housing data, and speeches by three Fed officials.

The weekly ICSC/Goldman same-store sales figures will come out at 7:45 a.m. ET. The weekly Redbook retail numbers will follow at 8:55 a.m. ET.

Second-quarter deficit numbers will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. The consensus forecast calls for  a reading of -$125 billion, compared with the first quarter's -$137.3 billion. Estimates range from - $130 billion to -$120 billion.

The Treasury's international capital report, which tracks the flow of financial instruments into and out of the United States, is scheduled for 9 a.m.m ET.

The housing market index for September will be released at 10 a.m. ET. The consensus expectation is a print of 38, up from August's 37 reading. Estimates range from 35 to 40.

A pair of 4- and 52-week Treasury bill auctions are also scheduled for 11:30 a.m. ET.

The three appearances by Fed officials are as follows:
  • Chicago Fed President Charles Evans at 8 a.m. ET.
  • New York Fed President William Dudley at 11:30 a.m. ET.
  • Richmond Fed President Jeffery Lacker at 6:15 p.m. ET.
