Today's economic calendar opens with the start of the Federal Open Market Committee meetings, leading up to monetary-policy announcement tomorrow.

The day begins with ICSC/Goldman same-store sales at 7:45 a.m. ET. A second retail report comes out at 8:55 a.m. ET with the weekly Redbook figures.

Housing starts for May will be released at 8:30 a.m. ET. The consensus forecast calls for a rise to 720,000 starts from April's 717,000, within an estimated range of 700,000 to 750,000. Permits are expected to rise as well, to 736,000 from 715,000, with estimates of 710,000 to 770,000.

A four-week Treasury bill auction will be announced at 11:30 a.m. ET.
